Chapter 19

Laen ushered the guards from their sentry duty outside of Océane’s doors and barked at them to find something more useful to do. He then stood in the spot they’d vacated and wondered if it might be better if he came back later. Because she might be ... sleeping. Yes, she might be asleep - despite the fact it was well into the morning. Or maybe she was busy. He huffed in exasperation with himself, pacing up and down for a moment until he finally admitted that she was neither busy nor sleeping but probably damned angry with him and liable to bite his head off the minute he stepped in the room.

He raised his hand, which hovered over the heavy oak door, and then he cursed and walked away back down the hallway. He made it about thirty feet before grinding to a halt, cursing some more and retracing his steps.

His hand rose to the door again. He could do this.

The knock seemed incredibly loud in the quiet corridor and he winced and then clenched his knuckles as he waited, and no reply came. He gritted his teeth and was about to leave when a slightly puzzled voice called out.

“Come in?”

He realised that nobody had ever knocked on the door before ... except maybe Corin as she was a prisoner and had not been allowed the right to privacy. He sighed as another layer of guilt added to the weighty pile he already felt smothering him. He told himself to man up and he opened the door.

She looked startled as well she might as she saw him come in, and he wondered how he could ever have made such an unflattering comparison about her eyes. The deep chocolate depths of them widened in surprise. His heart gave a lurch as they fixed on him and he prayed to the gods that he wasn’t about to mess everything up. He hesitated in the doorway like a fool, his hand still on the handle like he wasn’t sure if he was actually going to come in or turn and run away like the pathetic excuse for a man he knew he really was. Making his decision, he turned suddenly and pushed it shut, rather more firmly than he had intended and she jumped out of her skin as it slammed.

Damn.

Her eyes never left him and as he returned to meet her gaze he felt his wits and his tongue tie themselves in a pretty bow. It seemed the only way he could interact with her was if he was being an utter bastard and scaring her half to death. It was entirely her own fault however for looking so ... So ... Damn. She had chosen a red dress today. No, he amended, not red, plum. The deep red of a ripe plum, and gods did he want to sink his teeth into that tender flesh. He swallowed and shifted his weight from foot to foot.

Think boring thoughts, think boring thoughts .
